New home for my blog – codereflect.com

August 15th, 2009 Sarath Comments

Hello my dear readers,

I’ve been maintaining this blog for last couple of years and primarily it deals with windows programming tips and general thoughts on software engineering. In fact this is a mixed blog. I am not really constant with blogging topics. ( I know it’s bad while we are entering to serious blogging). That’s why I named this blog Sharing my thoughts.

Now to have my own identity, I own this blog in a new name www.codereflect.com. I am first time dealing with DNS configuration stuffs etc. Anyway it’s nice. It may take few day to get this stable. I am frequently facing lot of outages for this websites.

Why I named this site as codereflect.com? The answer is no specific reason it’s’ one the name quickly came to my mind when I thought about buying a domain name. Whatever be the things we write or talk about soft wares, the ultimate thing is code. We all implementing new policies, standards, best practices to improve the project development, improve quality of code. It’s the ultimate reflection.

So here I’ve a new home. CodeReflect.com. The blog is still hosted in wordpress.com. nothing else so far changed except the web address. Hope soon I will go to my own webspace.

Also today is Independence day for Indians. Wish you all a happy Independence day. Proud to be an Indian!

Why Cinema theatres in Trivandrum Simply Sucks?

April 27th, 2009 Sarath Comments

I’ve been working here in Trivandrum for last 5+ years. I never felt anything good in this place except the job opportunities of Techno Park and some tourist spots around here.

In the weekends, we used to go and watch newly released movies in theatres next to us. Let me tell few words about the theatres around here. Even we’ve a fantastic movie, how it’s possible to entertain us when we’re sitting in hell?

The following f**y things are being experienced on every movies I watch in theatres. Let’s go in the sequence

1. 2-3 weeks ago I went to watch the movie, Ayan at Ajantha theatre near Over-bridge. I patiently stood at the end of the queue and waited for some time. After few minutes I saw people are running inside the complex and making another queue. Do you know what’s happening there? Non reservation seats are selling at reservation prices. Those who came first and sweat till this time became fools. The fucky theatre owner will get extra 5/- per ticket. Which is quite illegal but if you need tickets. You should go there.

2. Okay. I required tickets for me and my friends. Now the way up to the theatre. It’s on 4th or 5th floor. You need walk slip-sloppy stair case to reach there. (No steps just a slope with smooth tiles). Anyway my friend Vijesh slipped down in between. Kicked his ass and remove the dust there and we reached at door. I don’t know how the old people are coming all this way up to see the movie.

3. Yes I grabbed my seat. Just looked around. The place around our seat appeared as a waste bin and we’re sitting inside it. All the ice cream cups, waste cola bottles etc. Were thrown around here. The theatre management should ensure that. If they would have placed enough waste boxes outside, at least they can reduce this issue.

4. Now let’s talk about the seats. You will be always sitting in torn old seats. In some theatres there are no cushions even in the higher circles. You can never take care of your ass during the movie. All the best.

5. Movies started so does the heat. The A/C is not turned on!!! 90% OF THEATRES NEVER TURN ON A/Cs EVEN IN THIS HOT SUMMER. You will be air-tight wagon containing 1000+ people. They’re charging us all the taxes and other charges including A/C. I’ve removed my shirt after some time (luckily no girls were sitting next to me, to see my hot body: P).

6. It’s interval time, let’s go and get some snacks. You could see that almost every items in the theatre snacks bar charging double of MRP. This is not the case of a theatre it’s happening even with KSFDC‘s (Kerala State Film Development Corporation) Kairal I theatre. For 8/- ice cream charging 15/-. For 8/- cola 12/-. For 5/- popcorn it’s 10/-. Nobody is to control this. Even we ask this to the sales man, he says like “we’re selling for this prices. If you’ve any complaints approach management. They’ve asked us to charge like this. We’re just employees”. Who the HELL gaining this? All these are happening with the knowledge of authorities. There are various departments in govt to ensure all the facilities and services provided at cinema theatres. They’re not doing their duties and also closing eyes towards this day robbery. I’m software professional. I’ve paid by my employer and they’re giving a fixed salary. I’m I getting anything more to support this day robbery? Even in the Techno Park itself there are shops like Chicking, selling cool drinks for an exceeding amount then MRP. They’re also saying the same story. Management asked to do like this. Event raised complaints through Techno Park websites, no action had taken. Once I complained to Trivandrum City Police through their online complaint facility I could not see any visible effect. Is it just for the sake of IT governance? The fact is nobody, including myself is not ready to go behind all these. But I should think like, why we’re paying for govt. authorities? They’ve ensure about this and they’re getting salary for doing their duties.

7. Now go back again to your seat and just finish watching movie in hell.

Various associations and communities in the Malayalam film industry is complaining people are not coming to theatres to watch movies! They are complaining that people are stick with some pirated CDs to watch movies, also the mega TV serials influencing the audience a lot. Even some time back the association has restricted many artists acting in serials. Who will come to fucky place like this to watch movies? People are coming to see the best movies and entertain themselves and filling your pockets with their money. Just do justice at least for what you’re getting.

There’s a simple theory behind every good movie. Strong story, good director, good artists and a good place to enjoy the movie. These are the fundamentals of every successful movie. Even without a strong stories or good comedy, Malayalee people will never accept the film even the heroes are super stars. If the factors are met accordingly people will rush to theatres. Nobody will ever try to get a pirated CD or wait to get the DVD released.

The laws and rules are not strict. No issues we’re supposed to live in this hell. This is not God’s own country just DOGS OWN COUNTRY.

Barriers to rapid reading – Article from The Hindu

March 18th, 2009 Sarath Comments

My Googling for a story told by B.S Warrier , returned another interesting article related on effective reading, posted in daily “The Hindu”. Here’s the content published in the original article.

Barriers to rapid reading

B.S. WARRIER

These are the main habits and practices that slow down your reading speed.

Photo: m. periyasamy

let it flow: Develop good reading habits early on.

There is no really insurmountable barrier

save our own inherent weakness of purpose.

— Kin Hubbard, American Humorist

You want to read fast. But there would be several impediments, mostly in the form of poor reading habits. Unless you consciously fight and overcome them, you may not be able to move forward.

•Reading word by word

This is how everyone started reading. But you have to come out of the habit and start seeing group of words, if you want to increase the speed. Also, reading word by word hampers comprehension.

Try the following sentence. Read each word aloud in the same tone, one word at a time.

The / habit / of / reading / word / by / word / is / a / serious / stumbling / block / in / enhancing / reading / speed / and / improving / comprehension.

You were slow in reading, and you failed to grasp the idea contained in the sentence.

Now try to read the same sentence as groups of words.

The habit of reading word by word / is a serious stumbling block / in enhancing reading speed / and / improving comprehension.

The logical grouping of words enhanced your reading speed and helped in comprehension. The idea contained in the text becomes clear only when you appreciate the relationship among the words. Remember, you read with the mind in unison with the eyes, and not by eyes alone. You must have noted that the tone differs from word to word when you read as word groups. A word flows into the next. There is a rhythm. Each word does not stop abruptly.

•Regression

If too much of regression has become a habit, despite the reader’s fine level of comprehension, a deliberate effort should be made to get rid of it. Elimination of habitual regression is possible, if you have the will to undergo reading practice with this goal in view. If, however, the text contains too many unfamiliar words, the construction of the sentences is roundabout or the ideas are hard to follow, you may have to regress to some extent.

•Faulty reading

Many people have defective visual perception; they would read one word for another – change for charge, sail for tail, censor for censure, industrial for industrious, Rome for roam, top for pot and so on. This leads to confusion in comprehension and consequent regression, slowing down reading. If it is a case of sheer carelessness, better concentration will help. If rapid word recognition is not being facilitated, drills in recognition should be attempted.

•Defective return sweep

Check how your eyes travel from the end of a line to the beginning of the next. If they move back horizontally along the line and then vertically drop to the start of the next line, there is room for correction. Train your eyes to travel diagonally from the end of a line to the beginning of the next. This will save the time for the return sweep almost to half. Frequently check and confirm that the new habit has taken roots in your system.

•Reading aloud

This seriously affects your reading speed. Though you can think quickly, your mind has to wait till the lips and the tongue have finished the movements to read out the passage. The pace of the loud reading would be constant. You do not spend more time for assimilating a tough idea; nor do you skip an easy passage that contains no new knowledge. Further, it would be hard for you to read aloud continuously for a few hours, since you would become tired.

If you allow your lips to move for reading, you can hardly exceed the speed of 150 words per minute. A good silent reader can easily go up to 350 words per minute or more.

You get a wrong impression that the passage has been learnt, when you finish reading it aloud once; the truth may be otherwise. Making a noise is different from grasping and idea.

Sometimes a reader may not be making a sound, but would be moving the lips and tongue as when reading aloud. This form of vocalisation also slows down your reading. If you go for silent reading, you can read fast and control your reading speed to suit the difficulty level of the passage.

A careful silent reader would have assimilated the ideas when he finishes the reading. The flexibility in silent reading enables him to read fast, with the speed of reading regulated in tune with the complexity of the passage. Even skimming through the passage could be done whenever possible.

There are instances where you have to read aloud, as when you are trying to improve your pronunciation or when you are enjoying the charms of poetry.

•Sub-vocalisation

In this, there is no movement of the lips, tongue or vocal cords. But you go on speaking to your inner self. You speak every word to yourself and listen to it. You ‘hear’ each word.

When you were learning to read, you used to hear physically every word. But that tradition should not be carried forward indefinitely. A fluent reader does not have to hear the words, either physically or in the head. He can see groups of words and grasp their meaning, without hearing them.

It is true that all would sub-vocalise at times. But that should be occasional and not a routine. If you are in the habit of sub-vocalisation, gradually bring it down, and see how you progress in increasing the reading speed. If you attempt to stop sub-vocalisation in one go, you would experience difficulty in comprehension. It has therefore to be a phased process.

•Finger pointing

This slows down the speed terribly. Though your eyes can travel fast, they are held down by the slow speed of the finger that rests on each word progressively. You can read only one word at a time. Some people move a pencil or pointer along the line of the print, as a guide to reading. No good reader should go for such a crutch.

•Head swinging

This is a habit shown even by very
educated persons. They swing the head from one fixation to the next or from one line to the next. There is no need for the head to move; the eyes can travel independently. They require no help from the swinging neck. After all, the swinging will cause muscular fatigue, and force you to stop reading after a short period.

Head swinging does not add to the reading speed. Unless someone else points out this defect, you may carry on with it, at the expense of your reading speed. Change the habit through conscious effort.

My thoughts on The Slumdog Millionaire

January 19th, 2009 Sarath Comments

Slumdog Millionaire is a nice movie. I’d appreciate Danny Boyle for his tremendous effort to make the film. Even it’s an English Movie, it contains all essence of an Indian Movie (not the essence of shit that Jamal had in his childhood).

If you believe or not, it’s the story of Millions of Slumdogs in India. I never heard such a guy came to reality show and won prize but it’s an interesting concept. Life in India not what we sees in Metros like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai.. you’ve to travel a bit far from metros or go and see slums. I never came from slum, in my short life experience I’ve met many people like this. I’ve seen and heard lot of related news. I’m not a person who truly explored to the poor India. From what I’ve been seeing for these years and experience I could say something. I’ve seen many people who’s struggling to make their day-to-day life. I saw people who dream to have breakfast-lunch-dinner everyday. All these are dreams for them.

Few months ago, I went to Bangalore as part of my examination and I had a small shopping at Brigade Road in a cool evening. When I was waiting for a friend of mine, I could see approx 10 year girl begging for money to a foreign lady. So tourist asked her back instead of giving money “you need ice cream? you need food? chocolates” she tried lot of different options but the girl resisted and started asking for coins (or notes) again.  I’ve seen many children who are not genetically faulted but faulted by a strong racket to present them as true beggars. Indian govt. has lot of good initiatives to protect the orphan children. But still it’s hard to get them out of this racket. Few years ago I believe, Manorama and other dailies in Malalayalam had done a good investigation in this matter and stories we heard was really shocking. We can understand, it’s not because of poverty(it’s once reason in fact),  All these are controlled by a strong big racket they can’t simply escape from this.

In north (sometimes in south) India you can see lot of riots in the name of Religion and cast. Even many governments silently supports these fucking riots(The recent Anti-Christian Attacks in Orissa). As Pakistan president Yusuf Raza Gilani said, poverty is the root for the terrorism. It’s true, people want to make their lives better. Then they will be dreaming more from their limitation which is smartly utilized by the terrorist and anti-socials against the countries. Now Indian govt. asking Pakistan to hand over the terrorists behind Mumbai attacks. Is it really possible for Pakistani’s to do this without support from anti-social Indians? In the movie Count of Monte Cristo, Napoleon Bonaparte says “People are either Kings or pawns”. These people are pawn who’s smartly used against the country external forces. They don’t know the seriousness of what they’re doing.

I know the topic is deviating from Slumdog millionaire. Amitabh Bachan criticized that, the film shows  a poor face of India. Dear Amitabh Ji, you’ve to admit that it’s a fact and it’s India.  If you see the Movie Swades, you can see the same situation. Villages without electricity, children selling glass of water for small 25 paisa (I’m not remembering the exact amount), parents who denies to send their daughters to school, the congested living of slums, prostitutes, smuggling, weapons, riots all these we can see in India. AND almost all citizens including politicians are aware about this. Rich remains rich poor remains poor. That’s the principle running the lives of many.

But there are no limitation for us to dream more, we want have good life, work for our country, make money to improve our lives, say no to terrorism. Dream, choose the right path, execute it and you will be the King , not a pawn. One day you will be a millionaire. Slumdog millionaire(if you insist to call yourself). The film is incomplete but still it gives lot of inspiration for the youngsters in India.

What you can do if your Dell laptop doesn’t show Bluetooth Device after re-installing Windows Vista?

January 17th, 2009 Sarath Comments

image After re-installing Windows Vista, I was unable to see my Bluetooth device in my XPS 1330 Laptop. None of the devices left unidentified when I checked the device manager. I can’t also see any options in the control panel to configure the device.

When I tried re-installing the Bluetooth driver, it said Turn the Turn on the Bluetooth device by pressing Fn+F2 key or using the radio button on the laptop. I wasn’t lucky with their instructions as none of these options turned on the Bluetooth device.

I immediately contacted the support person and he suggested to download and install “Patch for Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR)” from http://support.dell.com/. Viola, it worked fine. He said it’s because of some hardware/driver conflicts with wireless device and Bluetooth device.

Make sure of following things before download

1. You will not be able to find this patch under the Driver downloads for Dell XPS 1330.

2. You will have to navigate to “Driver Downloads->Notebooks->Inspiron->Model 6400 and choose operating system as “Windows XP” even you’re running Windows Vista

3. Download and apply patch. Ensure that you’re downloading the patch, not the driver. It’s only 153KB in size (when I downloaded)

4. The given link above is valid when I posted this, so please properly navigate and install the patch. If you’ve any further confusions call Dell support center

5. Do this at your own risk. Don’t blame me if something went wrong. So far this patch worked fine for me.

Leadership – An Excerpt from the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari

January 6th, 2009 Sarath Comments

I got a mail forwarded by my friend. It’s really refreshes, mentor and giving pace for my day.

An excerpt from the book Leadership Wisdom from The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari

“I am a leader. My life will not be defined by my title or my salary or my station. It will be defined by the actions I take and the legacy I leave through the leadership I show. I also understand that the greatest privilege of leadership is the chance to elevate lives and I am committed to adding value to the lives around me both at work and at home.

I vow to integrate the following 8 Leadership Rituals into my days:

1.      I will Link My Paycheck with My Purpose. I will remember that the deepest of all human needs is the need to live for something more important than ourselves and to contribute in a meaningful way to others. Therefore, I will stay focused on the higher meaning of the work that I do and how it improves the lives of human beings.

2.      I will Manage By Mind But Lead By Heart. When I show leadership at work, it will be through my heart. I will keep my promises. I will listen deeply, I will be consistently compassionate and I will be fanatically honest. Through the strength of my character and the quality of my actions, I will build deep relationships built on trust and respect. This will be a great source of my success.

3.      I will Reward Routinely and Recognize Relentlessly. Every one of us has a core human craving to be appreciated and honored. I will remember that behavior that is rewarded is behavior that will be repeated. I will sincerely praise work well done and be a great coach at work (and at home).

4.      I will Surrender to Change. The pace of change will never slow down, only speed up. Therefore, I vow to get good at being uncomfortable. I will not be complacent but will love change and risk and growth. I will never forget that, at the end of my life, what I will regret the most will not be all the risks I took but all the risks I did not take and all the fears I did not face.

5.      I will Focus on the Worthy and Concentrate on the Essentials. Time is my most precious commodity and I will use it well. I will reflect on the best uses of my time and energy and invest those only in activities which will advance the leadership vision that I have committed to. I will keep asking myself this question: "Is what I am doing now, the best possible use of my time and talents?" If not, I will have the wisdom to say no to it and refocus on a better activity.

6.      I will remember that Leadership On the Outside Must First Begin Within.. I cannot lead a team until I first lead myself. I will dedicate myself to a daily 30 minute period of renewal. I will care for my mind, body and character and keep developing my human talents. I will live by a standard of excellence and strive for mastery in all that I do.

7.      I will See What All See But Think What None Think. I will be creative and "run my own race". I know that, in this new knowledge-based economy, ideas are the currency of success. So I will stretch my mind and always see possibility where others see adversity. I will associate with other visionary thinkers and never forget that, ultimately, my thoughts form my world.

8.      I will Link My Leadership with My Legacy. I will remember that greatness comes by beginning something that does not end with me. I will go the extra mile in every thing I do and try and make a lasting difference in the lives of other people through my daily actions. I will leave this world a better place. I am important and I will have an impact.”

MRP What's it? Is it still valid?

August 7th, 2008 Sarath Comments

The living cost in India is increasing ever before. People are spending much more than before. Especially the people working at IT sector spending lot of money for parties get together, even for daily lunch and dinner. A medium class hotels are charging more than enough money comparing to the quality and service of the food we’re getting.

Leave about the hotels. What’s happening with the retailers? Suppose if you trying to buy a Coke which costs 8/- filled in a re-button bottle, you wont get it for that price. Let me explain few incidents.

The first issue happened at Kairali Theatre at Trivandrum. Normally the coffee shops charging almost double price for everything at their counters. If you buys an 8/- Cola, you will be forced to give 10 rs at least. The price is actually printed on the thick glass in black letters. People wont look at this as they want to escape from rush after getting their snacks and drinks. I just asked the cashier “Sir, this Cola only having an MRP of 8/-. Can you please check it? He said “no sir, it’s 10 rs”. When he repeated I shown him the the bottle and printed price. Then he took the bail by saying “Sir, we’re actually employees. Our owner take this shop for contract and asked us to charge this amount. If you’ve any complaints, please report it to the manager. but now, please pay the money which we’ve asked.” As I went there with my relative and I dint want to spoil the mood of the movie and kept myself irritated for few more hours.

See the 2 rs is not actually a big amount. I am very happy to give that small amount even a higher amount for the struggling people. I can’t understand what’s the rules and laws are doing here? Sure I was one among them, who never going to complain or keep the angry inside. There’s no use. But if this happens in U.S will he ever open the shop again? I am sure people will sue against him. But here the rules and regulations are much week. If we go behind these things, it will be risky. we may have to face bitter experience for the small amount.

The same thing happened at Bangalore when I brought a bottle of mineral water. They’ve charged the increased amount. I realized that this happens all over the country. Nobody including me reacts against it.

The other thing is the Auto charge. There are few good Auto Rickshaw drivers charging the actual fare. 80% of the auto and taxi drivers are getting double amount of the actual charge.

Here I’m working at technopark trivandrum. I am not having a car or two wheeler. I use the public bus service and rarely the company shuttle bus to reach techcnopark, I will have to get down at Karyavattom University stop and has to catch an Auto. Maximum 1-1.5 KM to the Bhavani building from the rear gate but what happens? They’re charging 20/- at least. I am luck enough because some guys are still paying 30 – 60 reach their office . This is a simple example. You’ll experience more if you get an auto and travel more than 2 KM in it. You will feel like paying to a 5* Auto.

All these are simple silly incidents. It’s happening more than this. Tell me still any rules and regulations are happening in this country? At least me, is not really interested to go behind these issues because I’ve other high priority things in my life. It’s bad I know. but when we will be having freedom from a black market like this?

Anyway, it’s Incredible India

Bangalore, Exams and back to Kerala

August 6th, 2008 Sarath Comments

It was tough time for last two weeks. I was trying to manage the subjects for my exams. Yea sure I blogged long time back don’t know why but still I’m trying to find interesting topics to blog. I just don’t want put some tips in my blog as it’s available with lot of development websites like DevX, Codeproject, Codeguru, MSDN etc.

I started from Trivandrum on 31st noon to write my B.S exams at Bangalore. I was suspended my studies as I stayed in Japan for long time. Now I resume with 3rd semester of course. The travel was fine and enjoyable with my colleagues and other friends. Actually most of us has planned to have studies and discussion the exam topics during the travel. That’s one of the reason to choose train to bus.

Nothing Happned till 8 AM other than the usual funny talks and stuffs.and we had coffee and snacks frequently. By 9 AM we have received the dinner ordered and had it as we’re seeing it for the first time.

Few minutes after dinner most of the people laid themselves down at their berth. We fell into sleep after few minutes because of the heavy and unbearable fun we had for last few hours.

The train reached at Bangalore at 6.30 AM on Friday Morning. We stepped down at Cantonment station. As usual the Auto Rikshaw drivers started trying to their customer. The fact is that they will be saying some amount most of the time, it will double or triple of the actual amount. So we used to get catch pre-paid auto where we get a slip with the actual amount has to be paid to the hiring Auto.

We used to stay at Hotel imperial for exam trip. The hotel is cheap and also not really neat. We had the breakfast from the coffee shop next to the hotel. I closed myself inside the hotel room and studied till the evening. By 6 PM I get down from hotel to do some shopping. And also eager to see the beautiful girls from Bangalore.

I directly went to take some money from ATM counter and rushed to Gangaram Book Bureau at MG Road. unfortunately the shop was closed because of solar eclipse. Then I came back to Higgin Bothms book center to check some new titles.

I was pretty interested to get Scott Berkun Authored “Making things Happen” but sadly they hadn’t the copy of the same. One of my friend accompanied me suggested buying Eric Segal’s “The Class” and “Doctors”. I was interested with “The class” and “The art of War” brought it. I also saw some books on Barrack Obama and it was surprise to know that there are lot of titles on the latest sensational U.S presidential candidate.

Few weeks back few of my friends from U.S said that, Obama is not a person or presidential candidate but he’s a feeling which is waving across U.S. Soon I stopped my shopping as the shop keeper declined to give me discounts on the books. Normally we used to get 10% discounts at least. He said “you will get that discount if you choose a computer/software related books” as the book dealers considering the whole books as a bull shit.

I had my dinner from Hotel Oasis with my ex-classmates and other friend. On the way back to Hotel I saw some end of season sale at Louis philippe show room. brought a trouser and shirt in no time as they were going to close the shop.

The Probability and Statistics Exams and Graphs & Networks exams went fine. I was much confident with the subject “Management Optimization” on the next day. Sunday, it was the greatest disaster as I failed to answer the questions of Optimization. I was not really good at managing the time at exam hall. I was pretty happy with the Digital Electronics examinations.

BTW, on Saturday I again went to Gangaram  to buy few more books. I asked the guy whether he has the copy of Berkun’s latest title. He said he will order for it if I make an advance payment. The Book costs around 36$ which is pretty costly in India. I give up the idea and was ready to satisfy my needs with “The Art of Project Management”.  I also brought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as gift to my friend.. The shopping came to an end there.

After the exams, by Sunday evening I started back to Trivandrum. On Monday we’ve reached back at TVM and back to work….

hmmm… That’s what happened in the last weekend for which I spent my days for last couple of weeks.
